DC have revealed their pans for Chapter 1 of the rebooted movie and tv world, the DCU
When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the DC movies and tv shows last year, there was a lot of hype around what that would mean going forward. Since then they have cancelled Henry Cavill’s Superman, which followed the CEO of Warner Bros killing off the almost finished Batgirl movie. Thanks to a new update from Gunn, we have a proper idea of what is to come.
The new line up has been called Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, which should give you an indication of where the movies and shows might be going, though don’t accept it to be entirely accurate.
“As we craft the plan for DC Studios, we are thrilled to share with fans the first 10 stories they can expect from the unified DC Universe featuring some of our most well-known characters as well as the next generation of marquee characters. Chapter 1 tells cohesive stories that highlight love, compassion, and the innate goodness of the human spirit, all designed to minimize audience confusion and maximize audience engagement across platforms.”
Before we get into the new, we will address a few things about the movies that are already confirmed. First up is Shazam: Fury of the Gods will release here on March 16, you can check out the new trailer below. At the end of the year Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will arrive, which is currently expected on December 26, though it could push until the start of 2024.
Finally, The Batman starring Robert Pattinson is getting a sequel, called The Batman: Part II it is coming in October of 2025.
Now let us look at all that was announced today, of which the split of 10 announcements was split evenly across movies and tv shows. The only movie to be dated today was Superman: Legacy, which is coming in July of 2025, just a few months before The Batman: Part II.
“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favourite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world. I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”
Here is the line up of movies, with a short synopsis of each:
Superman: Legacy – written by Gunn, the film will hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.
The Authority – WildStorm characters will join the DCU as members of The Authority take matters into their own hands to do what they believe is right
The Brave and the Bold – the DCU will introduce its Batman and Robin in this unusual father-son story inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic series
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow - this science fiction adventure, which will be based on Tom King’s amazing, award-winning recent comics stories, presents a Supergirl viewers are not used to seeing
Swamp Thing – the film will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing
It is important to note that The Batman: Part II and The Brave and the Bold are going to be set in different worlds, even though they are both Batman movies. Think Tobey Maguire against Andrew Garfield and you are on the right track. The Swamp Thing movie, has no connection to the recent TV series, outside of sharing the name.
Speaking of TV shows, there were 5 of them announced with four of them to be live action and one to be animated. These are the live action shows:
Waller – starring Viola Davis, this series features Team Peacemaker and will be written by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Supernatural)
Booster Gold – Booster Gold uses basic technology from the future to pretend to be a superhero in present day
Lanterns – this enormous TV event series follows intergalactic cops John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they uncover a dark mystery
Paradise Lost – set in Themyscira, home of the Amazons and birthplace of Wonder Woman, this drama focuses on the genesis and political intrigue of an island of all women
As for the animated one, the entire 7 episodes of the first season, at least for now, have been written by James Gunn.
Creature Commandos – a seven-episode animated show in which Amanda Waller creates a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners
