Disney+ The World According to Jeff Goldblum - Review

When it comes to streaming services, they are quickly becoming a dime a dozen, but it is not the service that matters, it is the content and with Disney+ launching here in Australia, we are getting all new content to enjoy and one such show is The World According to Jeff Goldblum.

The show is, for lack of a better word, intriguing as it is not your standard type of documentary. Each episode, of which I have watched four so far, is about a singular product or idea, from Sneakers to Tattoos, Denim to Ice cream, there appears to be no topic that Jeff does not find fascinating and that there is key, each of the topics are those that are of interest to Jeff Goldblum, thus the name.

The show follows a similar format each time, Jeff will introduce the topic of the show, discuss a little about it and then head somewhere to learn about. The first show, which is the only one I will detail a bit, is all about the humble Sneaker. A lot of the show is about asking the question why, why do we love a sneaker, why do people pay thousands of dollars for a pair and more, the question is why. Now you might think that asking question after question, would result in some dry viewing, Jeff manages to keep things fun, thanks to his quirky and humorous viewpoint on things.

When the subject of custom sneakers comes up, the show does not devolve into a how to, there are no step by step instructions provided on how to make your own, instead it takes the approach that everything is about the person they are for. Which is a nice way to think of the show, it is not a how to guide for life, but more of a way to experience a new look on a subject you thought you knew. Shoes are a testament to that fact, we all wear them, from dress shoes all the way down to thongs, everyone has a few sets, but the individualisation that makes their shoes, their own.

For a show that is about the simple things we see almost everyday, The World According to Jeff Goldblum could have been to dry to watch, thankfully it is the opposite. Jeff infects you with his desire to learn and passion in meeting new people, all the while passing on information you might not have known. The show is an easy suggestion for one of the first shows on Disney+ that you should watch.
