Meta Quest 3 has been announced and coming later this year
During the recent Meta Quest Showcase, it was revealed that the company had a new VR headset coming this Spring and its the Meta Quest 3, which is smaller and more powerful than the beloved Meta Quest 2.
While there is no exact launch date for the new model headset yet, it will launch in Australia at a price of $829 for the 128gb model, pricing on the one with more storage was not revealed.
Packed inside the smaller body will be a new Snapdragon chip, which should offer up more than double the graphical power of the Meta Quest 2. The screens inside the headset are also going to offer up a higher resolution, though specs were not confirmed.
One aspect that was confirmed to exist would be full colour pass through for the headset. Currently on the Meta Quest 2 headset, if you do pass through, you get a grey version of night vision. While that is serviceable, it is only really meant to be used for those needing to ensure their play area is clear of obstructions. The new colour pass through will be allowed to be used for gaming, meaning AR gaming.
Something that is a welcome change though is the overall smaller size, compared to the Meta Quest 2. Meta claim its 40% smaller comparatively and while I can see that, in the video above it looks super weird. That of course could be due to my being used to seeing the Meta Quest 2 for so long.
Much like the headset the controllers are also getting updated, becoming smaller and loosing that random circle around the top. They should still feel great, but if you want a pro controller, the Meta Quest Touch Pro controllers will be supported, just know that the current price for those is $479, so it is not exactly an every player buy.
Finally the games, there are a lot of games coming, but for those players who have a library of content, Meta Quest 3 will be fully compatible with all Meta Quest 2 titles, meaning out of the box there will be over 500 games to enjoy.
As I said before an exact date is not yet known, but it should be in October if their release history tracks.
