More Star Wars games are coming from Respawn Entertainment, including a Jedi Fallen Order sequel

Something that shouldn’t come as a complete surprise to many is that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, did very well with its sales, the game was well received by both players and critics. As such we got confirmation last year that another title was coming from that team at Respawn, but it was just a throwaway comment, today that has changed.

Lucasfilm Games and Electronic Arts have confirmed that a sequel is in development and that Respawn Entertainment are also bringing two additional Star Wars games to players. This is the official word from the PR.

Game Director Stig Asmussen and his team at the studio are already working on the next game in the action adventure Star Wars Jedi series, and are joined by two new teams working to deliver additional unique Star Wars gameplay experiences across multiple genres. Leading the development of Respawn’s all-new Star Wars first-person shooter game is Peter Hirschmann, Game Director at Respawn, who has a long and accomplished history with the Star Wars franchise. The third title is a Star Wars strategy game developed through a production collaboration with the newly formed studio Bit Reactor, helmed by games industry veteran Greg Foerstch. Respawn will produce the new Star Wars strategy game while Bit Reactor leads on the development of the title.

Seeing that Stig is back as the direct for the next entry in the Star Wars Jedi series is very welcome news indeed, but it is the inclusion of Peter Hirschmann that should have folks more excited.

Not only has Peter directed a game at Respawn already, 2020’s Medal of Honor Above and Beyond, the VR only title, he has been involved with FPS titles, since he helped co-create, produce and write the original Medal of Honor game back in 1999. But beyond that pedigree, the man was also a VP of Product Development at LucasArts for many years, overseeing titles like Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Star Wars: Empire at War and even Lego Star Wars.

“Working with Lucasfilm Games on a new FPS in the Star Wars galaxy is a dream come true for me, as this is a story I have always wanted to tell,” said Peter Hirschmann, game director at Respawn. Peter previously worked as VP of development at LucasArts, and was executive producer on the original Star Wars Battlefront games. Hirschmann and the team at Respawn have just begun work on the title.

The third game is actually one that Respawn are helping on and that is with a new studio called Bit Reactor, who if you don’t know them, is totally understandable, as they are brand new. The legacy that the studio founders have, along with a few of their staff are from Firaxis, specifically the XCOM series and it has already been confirmed that the third game will be a strategy title, which is great, because Empire at War was some time ago.

“We are excited to continue working with the superbly talented developers at Respawn,” said Douglas Reilly, VP, Lucasfilm Games. “They have demonstrated excellence in telling epic Star Wars stories along with best-in-class gameplay across different genres and we are looking forward to bringing more amazing experiences to the galaxy far, far away.”

“Building on the previous successes of our EA relationship, this new collaboration highlights the trust and mutual respect shared between the world-class teams at EA, Respawn and Lucasfilm Games,” said Sean Shoptaw, SVP, Walt Disney Games. “Fostered by the expertise and passion within each team, we will create thrilling original games for diverse audiences across the Star Wars galaxy.”

Of course, the reveal of two of the three means that we are unlikely to see them for sometime, but Star Wars Jedi has reportedly been in development for a number of years now and it is quite possible it will release this year.

Either way, the future of Star Wars games is looking very promising indeed.
