The Games of May 2021
Can you believe it, the month of May has arrived and while normally that would mean we are getting closer to the start of the convention season, which is still happening in a different way this year, it also means we are getting more games that were delayed.
Due to the way the world is, most of the games releasing this month, were planned to release earlier, but were delayed, but that is ok, as I am sure the extra time has made them all better, so without delay, on with the list.
Resident Evil Village
May 7 - PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
The 9th mainline title in the series, Resident Evil Village is picking up after the events of RE7 and once again continues the story of Ethan. This time though, there are more than just weird people in a rural house to deal with, there are Vampires, Werewolves and Chris Redfield…
Hood: Outlaws & Legends
May 10 - PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
No men in tights are needed here, instead you and three mates will team up to break into a location and steal all the treasure you can, all the while, avoiding the opposing team, who is trying to do the same. Combining multiplayer action with a character class system that will let you experiment, as you play and a years planned content, there is a lot to look forward to in this one.
Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir & The Girl Who Stands Behind
May 14 - Switch
Part crime drama, part visual novel, these are two unique titles that most folks will never have heard of before. Being completely remade for the Switch, in the first game you will attempt to solve the riddle of a powerful family and the death of their head and in the second, you will try to solve a supernatural mystery that is plaguing students at a school. The only catch with this, is that you get both games at once, you can’t buy them on their own here.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition
May 14 - PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
One of the most beloved series in gaming history is finally getting that HD remaster that people have been demanding for years now and Bioware are not just upping the visuals. There are changes across the board, like refining how the gunplay in the first title feels, to ensuring the Mako is driveable on all planets, even bringing the Mass Effect 3 version of FemShep into the first game, for consistency, oh and the elevators are also fast now, like really fast.
Subnautica: Below Zero
May 14 - Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Could you survive on another planet, with only a few tools as your disposal? You will find out in this game, because that is how you start, how you end, well that depends on your choices, in order to survive you need to build and somethings may not enjoy your building near them and while most are four legged in their appearance, there is the occasional biped to deal with, so good luck.
Days Gone
May 18 - PC
Days Gone is the latest title from PlayStation Studios to make the jump from console to PC and like Horizon Zero Dawn before it, there is a lot of extras for the PC crowd. Widescreen support, high frame rates and more, check the video out below to see them, but you also get an interesting tale, set in a world overrun by zombies, where if you make the wrong choice, will have you trying to survive against the horde.
Knockout City
May 21 - Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Velan Studios is made up of a few well known industry folks and their first game, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, was a fresh take on a classic game and Knockout City is very much the same. Taking Dodgeball to new heights, as it can be played on top of skyscrapers, you and your teammates will need to throw, catch, dodge and more, in order to come out on top in this unique multiplayer game. Plus with cross-play at launch, there will always be folks to target.
Miitopia
May 21 - Switch
The 3DS entry in the series proved that Nintendo can make some really unique games, it getting a Switch version means that they love to revisit. You are you, yep, you or at least a Mii version of you and your party is made up your family, friends and celebrities you like and your mission, save the world from the Evil Lord, also cast by you, who is stealing the faces off people in your world, it is a pure Nintendo story.
RUST
May 21 - Xbox One, PlayStation 4
At this point you either know about Rust or you don’t care about it, but if you somehow have never heard of the game before, the best way to explain it is, you have to survive. You wake up in a world, alone and without any supplies, if you want a stick from a tree, you can’t punch the tree until one breaks off, you need to find a stone to help you. The danger comes from the fact that you are not alone, other players are also trying to survive and those that are thriving, may just take exception to your being alive.
Biomutant
May 25 - PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Think Mass Effect, but with animals and mutant powers, that puts you on the right track for Biomutant. Everything about your character is yours to create, make them heavier and while that will reduce their speed, it means they are more of a tank in combat. The more you deal with the folks in the world, the more they will start to like you and offer you more quests as a result, plus add in cybernetic upgrades and a karma system, there is a lot to unpack, in this seemingly idyllic game.
Kings of Sea
May 25 - Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Avast there, get ready to take to the seas and conquer them, for you are a pirate and will fight to regain what was taken from you. Part adventure, part action and all procedurally created, there is very little here that won’t stop you from replaying the game. Of course, there is a demo out on PC as well, should you want to test the waters, so to speak.
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster
Date - Switch, PC, PlayStation 4
A HD remaster of an iconic title, in an iconic series, that is a lot of expectation, but things could be looking up, even if the world has ended. You are given special powers and then a choice, assist the demonic invasion of Tokyo, or stop it and should you choose the later, your friends might become your enemies, so choice is key, even in battles.
Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries
May 27 - Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One
The first single player driven Mechwarriors game in almost 20 years, the game tells the tale of a rookie mercenary, that is you, who is set to take on contracts across the world. Building up your rep is just as important as building up your mech, because without either, you won’t survive the world around you.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground
May 27 - PC, Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4
The Warhammer universe is as vast and varied as our own and Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground, is taking a more tactical approach to it. You will choose one of the three factions to be yours and in the campaign, as you play you will unlock new units and more, to help give you the edge in this turn based title. Feeling confident, you can take your battles online in multiplayer matches that will really test your skills in battle.
So there you go, a large and varied number of games this month, but as always there are countless that we did not list and that doesn’t include any shadow drops that might spring up.
