What Are PlayStation Studios Working On… A Look At Their Studios
2024 for PlayStation was a very quiet year, yes they had Astro Bot and Lego Horizon Adventures, but they were only a few of the original games from the house of play.
Going into the year we knew it would be a slow year as PlayStation themselves admitted it would be. A number of the big releases for the year were either developed by other studios and published by PlayStation or PC ports of some of their games.
Here is a list of all the games published by PlayStation in 2024, with those titles bolded being original releases:
The Last of Us Part II Remastered - PlayStation 5
Helldivers II - PlayStation 5 | PC
MLB The Show 24 - PlayStation | Switch | Xbox
Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition - PC
Rise of the Rōnin - PlayStation 5
Stellar Blade - PlayStation 5
Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut - PC
Concord - PlayStation 5 | PC
Astro Bot - PlayStation 5
God of War Ragnarök - PC
Until Dawn - PlayStation 5 | PC
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered - PlayStation 5
Lego Horizon Adventures - PlayStation 5 | PC | Switch
Of course 2024 saw a number of studios closed across the industry and PlayStation was no different. These are the studios that were closed:
Firewalk Studios
London Studio
Neon Koi
What is sad about two of the studios is that before they even got their first games shipped, PlayStation scooped them up and while Firewalk Studios launched Concord to, lets say less than thunderous applause, the studio was scrapped just weeks later. Neon Koi never even got a chance to get their game out and London Studio, who honestly kept the PlayStation brand going in the PlayStation 2 era with SingStar was shuttered. Perhaps the biggest slap in the face from former PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, he visited the studio 5 days before he revealed it was closing and no one there had any idea.
So with that all done, what does 2025 look like, lets see what we can find out.
BEND Studios
Last Game Released: Days Gone | Series: Syphon Filter Series
2025 marks the 6th year since Bend Studios released Days Gone for the PlayStation 4 and in that time, we know they helped with the PC port, but since then the have been working on something new. Now I could have copied most of last years blurb for the studio, as they haven’t said anything for yet another year, but just a few weeks ago, some leaks happened that may give us some insight into the works of the studio.
A number of screens leaked from an apparent 3rd person military shooter, which was going to take place in an all-new game world, not connected to any of their existing series. So those hoping for new Syphon Filter or SOCOM might be waiting a bit longer. Now while nothing has been announced by the studio, Sony have gone around and had those leaked images taken down from everywhere they could, so as the saying goes where there is smoke, there is fire. The studio does have a number of positions open, at the time of writing one of them is for a combat systems specialist, so it does line up with a shooter game. The big question of course is will we hear from them this year? I think we will, Sony basically had 2024 off from their major studios and with Bend having six years between releases, that would be plenty of time, though they did take 7 years to make Days Gone, so think on that for a moment.
BluePoint Games
Last Game Released: Demon’s Souls | Series: Many ports and collections
In 2020 when the PlayStation 5 launched, Demon’s Souls was right there alongside the console, but since then the studio has not released a game of their own. Notice that I put that little bit at the end, as the studio did assist Santa Monica with God of War Ragnarök. We have heard for a while now that the studio is working on something new, some outlets are reporting that lately as news, but it has been known since 2021.
The studio wasn’t quiet in 2024 as they did put out a PlayStation 5 Pro patch for Demon’s Souls, but beyond that we haven’t heard from them in a while. The question about what their new game is though is harder to answer. At the time of writing they had an open position for a Senior Character Animator and Lead Technical Artist. Neither of the jobs indicate anything about what game type they could be working on, and given the team is much smaller than some others in this group, they won’t be working on multiple things at once. 2025 has to be the year we hear about whatever the studio is working on, but I doubt that whatever it is will release this year.
Bungie
Last Game Released: Destiny 2 | Series: Halo series, Marathon Series, Oni
2025 will mark the 8th yeah since Destiny 2 released and in that time, the studio has released a lot of content for the game, but 2024 saw the release of The Final Shape, the last major expansion for the game. There is still more content coming for the game, but the developers are swapping from big releases to more frequent, smaller releases. It has also been almost 2 years since Bungie revealed a new entry in their Marathon series, but we haven’t seen or heard anything of substance on that since.
So what does 2025 hold for Bungie, right now its going to be a lot of Destiny 2 as just before Christmas, the studio released their road map for 2025 and into 2026 for the game. As for Marathon, we did get a dev update at the end of October 2024, where it was revealed that more details would be revealed in 2025, with more playtesting taking place. Sadly that video didn’t reveal anything concrete on release date details. For now Bungie is going to be all on on Destiny 2, surprise, but I would expect we would start to hear more on Marathon later in the year.
FireSprite
Last Game Released: Horizon Call of the Mountain | Series: The Playroom, The Persistence
It has just passed over 3 years since PlayStation bought up Firesprite and since that acquisition the studio has released one game, Horizon Call of the Mountain for PlayStation VR2, which at the time of writing is the only internally made game for the platform. Since that release in 2023, the studio has been on some rocky ground, as reports surfaced in early 2024 about absurd crunch levels for the game and with new leaders appointed at the end of the year not getting trust from employees. The layoffs that PlayStation revealed at the start of 2024 also impacted the studio, with a rumoured Twisted Metal game that they were working on, being cancelled as a result.
Right now the studio is working on something new that they are describing as a AAA title, but there are no official details beyond that. They do have a small number of jobs open and one of them describes work for a narrative adventure, with a heavy focus on atmosphere, storytelling and player agency. To me that sounds like either another VR title or a very heavy story focused game and with rumours of the studio working on Until Dawn 2, it could go either way. Given their relative silence for the past 2 years, a reveal of the new game this year would be likely, however a release would not be.
GUERRILLA GAMES
Last Game Released: Lego Horizon Adventures | Series: Killzone series, Horizon series
Guerrilla Games have had a busy few years, well sort of. Since 2022 the studio has had four projects release, well plus an expansion, but from that number only one and the expansion was done by them entirely, the rest was done by partner studios. 2022 saw Forbidden West release, with 2023 getting the expansion and the PlayStation VR2 only Call of the Mountain. 2024 saw both Lego Horizon Adventures and Zero Dawn Remastered release, giving more ways to enjoy the world of Aloy. But outside of Forbidden West, the rest of the work was lead by other studios, with Guerrilla providing support and guidance, so it begs the question, what have they been up to?
They clearly have something coming as just before the 2024 holidays kicked into gear, they put up more than a dozen roles they were looking to fill. These consisted of cinematic director, game systems designer, character animators and engine specialists. We know they have no plans for Killzone, though the series is being somewhat revived in Helldivers 2. Given that their studio has a few hundred staff working there and they won’t have been fully used overseeing recent projects, I suspect this will be another one that is revealed this year, but released next year, but I could be wrong.
Haven Studios
Last Game Released: None | Series: None
Ok, so I try not to be mean about game developers, but these guys are asking for it. Haven Studios was founded in 2021 by Jade Raymond, a name you really should know, as she helped make Assassin’s Creed and Watch_Dogs for Ubisoft, before heading to Electronic Arts. There she created a new studio called Motive Studio, which has since created content for Star Wars: Battlefront II, Star Wars Squadrons and the recent Dead Space remake.
Given her stellar gaming credits, I was always going to give her time to get her new studio up and running, but that time has run out. The studio was founded in March 2021, PlayStation bought them out in July 2022 and in March 2023, Fairgame$ was announced. Since then, almost 2 years ago now, there has not been a single update on the game. The studios website has nothing and the official Twitter account has not seen any posts since the reveal back in 2023. Now given the issues with Concord, Haven could be working on changing some aspects of their game, but I seriously doubt that, given that the studio was bought with Fairgame$ being already prototyped. The studio still has job listings for gameplay programmers, user experience research and worst of all, a senior writer, so unless they are cooking up a second game, it would be fair to say this one is not happening any time soon.
HouseMarque
Last Game Released: Returnal | Series: Super Stardust series
For the longest time, Housemarque were releasing a game a year and then after 2017 they went quite, until 2021 when they shipped Returnal. Now we are 4 years later and the studio has been very quiet on whatever their new project is, but we do know somethings. First up, 2024 saw the studio finish their move to their new office, so congrats to the team on that, but they also were hiring a number of roles.
In July 2024, a job posting for a Senior Game Designer popped up, advising the job would be on the studios next AAA Action game. Just before the 2024 holiday season kicked off another job posting confirmed the Returnal team were working on something new. The odds of it being another single player title are very strong as PlayStation themselves consider the studio to be a Single-player, Narrative Focused developer. Given how quiet the studio has been, I would expect news this year, with an early 2026 release for whatever they are cooking up.
Insomniac Games
Locations: Burbank, CA | Durham, NC
Last Game Released: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 | Series: Spyro series, Ratchet & Clank series, Resistance series
Ah poor Insomniac Games at the end of 2023 they were hacked by a group of ******** and they had a lot of details released and now at the end of 2024, another leak happened, this one showing off Silk in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. While this latter leak is not as big the hack, it is still a bit of a letdown for the studio, to have any of their work shown off before it was ready.
So does that mean that we will officially see Spider-Man 3 in 2025? Not a chance, first up the game has not been officially announced and there was a two year gap between Spider-Man 2 being announced and released. The more obvious reason is that Wolverine is still coming out before Spidey, the only issue there is that we have only seen the game in once at its reveal in 2021 and we are 3.5 years later and we haven’t seen anything else on it. Will we see it this year, yes, will it release this year, maybe. The only reason it might not release in 2025 is that the games Creative Director left in the middle of 2024, and there is no way of knowing how much of the game might change from a new CD. Honestly this one can go either way, with no jobs open at either of the studios locations, they might be working to get the game out this year, but again its a flip of the coin either way.
Media Molecule
Last Game Released: Dreams | Series: Little Big Planet series
2024 was another quiet year for Media Molecule, as for the 4th year in a row they had nothing new to release since 2020’s Dreams. 2023 was when the studio stopped creating new content for the game, though they were still supporting it with patches, but that was it. Once the official content stopped for Dreams, the studio did state that they were moving onto their next game.
What is critical about this new game, is that they have confirmed it will be less creative and more gaming, which is nice. We have also heard that it will be a new IP, so fans of Little Big Planet and Tearaway are going to be missing out for a bit longer. The studio has a few jobs they are looking to fill, one of which describes narrative and in-game resource systems, which should remind you a little of Little Big Planet. The studio has been very quiet for a while and while they are a bigger studio, they are not known for revealing things until they are ready. Given the potential busy 2025 for PlayStation, I could see whatever this game is waiting until 2026.
Naughty Dog
Last Game Released: The Last of Us Part I | Series: Uncharted series, The Last of Us series
It has been a few years since the last original game from Naughty Dog, with 2020’s The Last of Us Part II and since then most of their work has been remakes or ports of the games from the series. Of course, at The Game Awards 2024, the studio revealed their next title Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
The game has no release date, but 2026 would be our guess, just due to the time the game has been in development, which apparently started back in 2021. The other reason is PlayStation have moved into this cycle of revealing a game at least 1 year before they release it. The problem is that all we have is that reveal trailer and a letter from the games director and neither gives any hint as to the release. So apart from a new trailer in 2025, I would not expect this one to show up in any significant way.
Polyphony Digital
Last Game Released: Gran Turismo 7 | Series: Gran Turismo series
In 2022 Gran Turismo 7 released and since then, Polyphony Digital has keep a decent release cadence of content coming for the game, they just released some around Christmas in 2024. A few weeks before that, the studio released what is essentially a demo for the game, well expanded demo, in the form of My First Gran Turismo.
Given the studio supports their games for a good number of years, that is unlikely to change in 2025. The studio will likely keep the content coming for the game, though the size of it might change. The game has seen PlayStation VR2 support added and more recently a PlayStation 5 Pro update, so they are not opposed to bigger updates and an expansion with a lot of new cars and tracks, would likely do quite well. The problem with the studio is that they are notoriously quiet, with us only hearing about what they are working on, when they officially announce it. We will still see their name this year, but the only question will be on how often.
San Diego Studio
Last Game Released: MLB The Show 24 | Series: MLB The Show series
Honestly, I could copy most of the text from last years entry in this series for this studio. In 2006 they released a game called MLB 06: The Show and apart from the name evolving to MLB The Show 2016, in 2016, they have not done much else. Of course, the games have evolved with the platforms and now comes to Switch and Xbox, as requested by the MLB.
In November 2024, the studio confirmed that MLB The Show 25 would be coming, surprise, alongside revealing a few details about the next game. The usual schedule for the series has them dropping news in February and then basically every week until the games release in April of that year and I don’t see that changing this year.
Santa Monica Studio
Last Game Released: God of War Ragnarök | Series: God of War series
Last year saw God of War Ragnarök celebrate its 2nd anniversary on consoles and in September 2024, saw the game come to PC. But after the release of the Valhalla DLC for the game in 2023, the studio has been very quiet on whatever is next for them.
A job listing in 2024 revealed that the studio is working on a new IP and at the time of writing at least, have a number of jobs open for a number of disciplines. The studio has had a consistent pace of releases, with four years being the count between the two recent God of War games, so if the studio keeps that same cadence going, then I wouldn’t expect to see anything from them until 2026. But if this new project is an all-new game, then it could be later. But whatever it is, we shouldn’t expect to see anything new from them this year.
Sucker Punch Productions
Last Game Released: Ghost of Tsushima: Legends | Series: Sly Cooper Series, Infamous series
This could be the year for Sucker Punch, as we already know that they are aiming to release Ghost of Yōtei in 2025, but there is no release window for it yet. The studio has a few QA jobs open, so we know they are getting things done, we just need to wait for the release date.
As for the movie adaptation of the first game, that is still in pre-production, but there is no timeframe on when it will actually get anywhere. Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick series is still on board, but the man has 10 productions he is directing, all in various states. That means until an official reveal of cast or a production start date happens, there is nothing more on this front.
Team Asobi
Last Game Released: Astro Bot | Series: Astro series
With Astro Bot releasing just a few months ago, and the studio releasing extra content at a decent pace, we are likely just going to hear from this group with regards to those updates. Anything beyond that is not likely, given their smaller size and the fact they just shipped a pretty great game.
Support Studios
The below studios are owned by PlayStation, but they are not original content makers, they support the studios above with the games they are making, or porting games to new platforms.
Adelaide Studio
Last Game Released: None | Series: None
Yeah, did you know that PlayStation has an office in Adelaide, South Australia? I didn’t and while they have a studio, its more for the tech side of things. Specifically they are network people, they make the tech that lets your PlayStation games connect online, connect to other platforms and all that other fun network stuff.
Malaysia Studio
Last Game Released: None | Series: Many
One of the support studios, PlayStation Studios Malaysia assists with games that PlayStation are making. They were founded back in 2020 and have assisted with the MLB The Show series and The Last of Us. The studio works on any number of projects at once, which is what makes them a support studio.
NIXXES
Last Game Released: None | Series: Many ports
If you play a PC game from PlayStation, there is like a 70% chance that this studio was the one that made it happen. Since 2021 they have brought Horizon, Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima and Ratchet & Clank to PC and they are not slowing down. They were also the lead on the 2024 release of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for PlayStation 5 and PC.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to swing onto PC on January 31st and then in April, The Last of Us Part II Remastered is coming, both of which are coming from this group. When they are not porting games, they are assisting with games, so you will see there name this year in many forms.
San Mateo Studio
Last Game Released: None | Series: None
San Mateo is the location of the PlayStation headquarters and where this team is located. While not a developer per say, they assist second party studios with their games, as well as providing support for the first party efforts where required.
As they are not going to headline their own game, you might spot their name in the credits of a 2025 release, but that will be it.
Valkyrie Entertainment
Last Game Released: None | Series: None
Like the others in this group, Valkyrie Entertainment is a support studio, that means they won’t headline a game, but they will help with many others. Due to their support nature, sometimes their work might go uncredited, like some folks claim they worked on Rise of the Ronin, a PlayStation 5 exclusive from Koei Tecmo but their name is not in the credits.
Given their support nature, they might show up in the credits of a game this year, we will just have to wait to see.
And that is PlayStation and what we think will happen in 2025. Do you think we will see a lot from them this year, or will it be a bit busier than 2024, but not as busy as it could be. There are a LOT of games coming in 2025, so it is going to be a busy year regardless.
